About Andrew |

Chances are if you're at this page you at least have some clue about who Andrew is. But in case you somehow missed "Touched by an Angel"'s 9 year run, here it is in short: Andrew was created by show producer Martha Williamson and her team of writers. In the show, Andrew is a former caseworker promoted to angel of death. He works several cases with his old friend, Tess, and her protege Monica. And that's all good and if ya need more detail check out the official TBAA page. Oftentimes in the course of JABB we will pretend Andrew is real and his story (as well as those of his friends) became the basis for TBAA. This becomes complicated when there are episodes in which Monica and Andrew meet for the first time multiple times or Andrew is an AOD when other episodes say he should have been a caseworker that year. So for the history of our "real Andrew" we took the storylines we liked best and spun them into the "official" story. We then said any deviations from that story were dramatic license on the part of the TBAA writers.
The history of Andrew as
interpretted by JABB is thus: Andrew was created many thousands, if not
millions of years ago, by God. What his career consisted of in
those early years we do not know. Based on what Monica said on
the show, we can guess he may have spent some time in any or all of the
following positions: angelic choir, search and rescue,
anunciations. By the year 1865 he was well-established as a
caseworker, under the guidance of his supervisor Sam. In April
of that year, he was assigned to John Wilkes Booth. He attempted
to dissuade Booth from assasinating President Lincoln. Of course,
he did not succeed. Andrew was distraught at what was apparently
his first failure. However, God was not disappointed in his angel
and promoted him to angel of death on April 26th of that year.
And so our hero served God and humanity in that capacity for several
years, assumedly alone (except for his omnipresent Father,
natch). Until one fateful day in the 1990s... It was then
he met up again with his friend Tess and was introduced to the angel
under her tutelage, Monica. The three then spent several years
working as a team. (And here's where the authors of JABB start
having fun!) At some point in 1995, Andrew appeared to
actor John Dye and told him it was God's will the actor portray the
angel on TV. This event is recounted in JABB 110.
In March 2000, the angel came to a world called Dyeland. From
then on he played a vital role in Dyeland, serving as its elected
president for a few years. At some point prior to 2003, the trio
of Monica, Tess, and Andrew broke up. However, Andrew still sees
his friends often. And that, very briefly, is JABB's "official"
history of Andrew.
So clearly we took some events as
shown on TBAA and put our own spin on it. Except for cases of
inconsistency, when we write JABB we pretend most of what TBAA shows
was true. We just built on it. This became especially
necessary once production of TBAA ended. We wanted to keep the
character alive and give him further adventures. So, for example,
we have
Andrew getting a special commision from God in 118.
A handful of issues mention him being in a rock band with fellow AODs,
Adam and Henry. In 126 he
becomes dangerously discouraged after a difficult Christmas season
assignment. He's also given a nemesis named Eben, a character
original to JABB with out a TBAA counterpart. In 163,
he's falsely accused of murder and put on trial. JABB 185
tells what happens when a Dyelander keeps him off her wedding invite
list. A story found in 194
details a caseworking assignment, in the 1600s
when many people were accused of being witches, that
forever changed Andrew. 206
finds Andrew watching "The Journalist" with some Dyelanders.
After a trying year, Andrew and the Dyelanders look back on their time
together and celebrate in two Christmas stories found in 208.
In 224,
the Dyelanders and their friends think back on their fondest memories
of Andrew. A more detailed list of Andrew's activities can be
found in his Encyclopedia
entry. Among JABB's other innovations are designating
September 20th as his birthday celebration, giving him a dog named
Lulu, and generally representing him as a dear friend to all of the
Dyelanders. None of this, of
course, was part of the show we loved so much but we do attempt to keep
the character in the spirit of the show. I hope we have.
Much thanks to the TBAA writers and John Dye for creating a character
that we've had so much fun with for the past several years!
